A few blocks away Jake and Toni found a taxi. They were now heading quickly back to her apartment. Jake felt the side of his leather jacket and realized it was in pretty bad shape after hitting the pavement. Luckily, he had jumped before the car got going too fast.

“What if he’s waiting at your apartment for you?” Jake asked Toni.

She moved her head closer to Jake and whispered. “Then we either kill him or bring him in.” Toni leaned forward and said something to the driver in Italian.

The driver nodded and smiled.

“What was that?” Jake asked.

Before she could answer, the driver pulled over to the curb and Toni jumped out. She found a pay phone and shoved some coins in. Her call was quick, lasting less than thirty seconds. Then she got back to the taxi and got in the back seat again with Jake.

“You called in their apartment?” he asked.

She smiled and nodded.

“Awesome.”

They got to Toni’s apartment and they had the driver wait for them. Once they got into the dark corridor, each of them pulled their guns and expected to find Sergio and his people waiting. But Jake guessed Sergio would have had to regroup at either the apartment or some other pre-determined location. That would take time.

Inside, Toni went to her closet and shoved her clothes into a bag. Next, she removed a small panel from inside the closet and pulled out a smaller bag, which she put in the larger bag with her clothes. Then she looked around, making sure she had everything important.

Jake found the bag and clothes Toni had helped him buy earlier in the day.

Together, they hurried out of there and down the stairs to the waiting car.

He grabbed her bag and shoved it in the back seat, sticking his on top of hers. Then he ran around the back of the taxi and was about to get in when he saw the Fiat approaching from the rear.

Jake pulled his gun.

A woman screamed and Jake looked up at Maria, hanging out her second-floor window. “Get down,” he yelled, at both Maria and Toni as he jumped into the car and lowered his window.

Then Toni yelled at the taxi driver to get going just as the first bullets started flying, a couple hitting the back window.

The taxi driver jammed the gas down hard.

Both Jake and Toni leaned out their windows and returned fire, hitting the windshield and the front grill of the Fiat.

Now the taxi driver did what most taxi drivers did in Naples—he drove like a maniac through the streets. Jake guessed the guy knew these streets better than most. The driver kept turning right and left to avoid the shots, the entire time yelling something in Italian.

Eventually the Italian police took up the chase behind the Fiat and Jake knew it was only a matter of time before they would set up a road block.

Soon they reached the waterfront, and the taxi driver turned toward the north out of town.

“Where does this road go?” Jake asked Toni.
